Karen Thomson at KAM Hair and Body Spa shares her tips for this summer’s hair.

Summer is here and it’s the perfect time for clients to change up and revamp their look for the new season. With the sun out, it’s also a great time for clients to step away from the heated styling tools, embrace their natural hair texture and experiment with more low maintenance, effortless looks to avoid more damage being done to their hair, whilst giving their look a fun, summer feel. Here are my predictions on what will be the hottest haircuts and styling trends this season…

Haircuts

Blunt bobs – For those who want a chic summer look the blunt bob is perfect. The great thing about this style is that it can be styled more polished and sleek or more messy and effortless, depending on the client’s preference. If they have coloured hair, styling the bob sleek is a great way to really show off and enhance the hair colour. This haircut also works particularly well for those with thin hair, giving the appearance of more volume. However, this cut generally looks great on everyone. The style can also be tailored to suit the individual, for example, for those with round face shapes who may want to give their face shape a more elongated look, the bob can be taken a little longer in length. Contrastingly, those with oval face shapes may want to wear their bob a little shorter. Fringes also look incredible teamed with this cut and can give the look a further on trend finish. For clients who may want to draw attention away from their forehead, a fringe also looks great incorporated
into this cut.

Mullets

For those who like a longer, more textured and effortless looking cut, the mullet is a fantastic choice and is one of the most talked about trends this year. The key with this look is having it shorter on top and longer at the back, however, for 2022 we are seeing a more modern approach with the cut including softer layers and the addition of face framing and fringes to give the look a softer appearance and a fresh feel. This is a great haircut choice for those who want to do little to no styling to their hair, as it can instantly be given a sexy finish by misting through some salt spray and scrunching it into the hair.

Styling

Textured looks will become a major trend this season with textured, beach like waves being one of the most prominent textured hairstyling trends. This look can easily be created by using a texture spray or mousse in damp hair and scrunching it into the hair before leaving to air dry. However, to create a more ‘s’ like wave, hair wavers are great for creating this look before finishing off with a volume or texturising spray to give the style a more gritty, effortless appearance, as well as hold. My must have texturising spray is the Matrix Texture Builder Messy Finish Spray.

Effortless Updos

During summer clients will want to wear their hair out of their faces and this can be easily achieved with effortless updos. Think braids, low slung buns and pinned updos that take all of the hair back off the face and that suit the laid back, summer vibe. Whilst clients are in the salon, show them your top tips for recreating these look easily at home and provide product recommendations.

Defined Curls

Summer 2022 is the year for clients to embrace their natural hair texture and show off their gorgeous curls in all their glory. A hair diffuser is great for taking away frizz and flyaways in curly hair and giving curls more definition, however, there are also so many fantastic curl products that can be used to help create a similar look whilst giving curls more body and shine. The Matrix Total Results A Curl Can Dream Defining Gel is one of my favourites.
