How To Perfect Your Client’s Face Shape Using Hair Extensions
Placing hair extensions is very similar to placing colour, and sometimes you don’t need to use colour at all to create the effect you want.
Everyone’s current Tik Tok obsession? The Hair Length Indicator.
It’s a filter that works by measuring the facial dimensions and stating if you’d better suit longer or shorter hair; with trending Bobs doing the rounds again, expect lots of clients in your chair looking for
big transformations.
Hair and face shape have always gone hand in hand – who can forget the face shape charts which dictated the haircut best suited which face shape. Reshaping or enhancing clients faces has never been easier – and no, you don’t even have to reach for the bleach if you don’t want to!
Placement
Katy Grimshaw, Founder of Spectrum One Hair Extensions says, “hair extensions can really make a big impact on how our client’s face shape looks. Placing hair extensions is very similar to placing
colour, and sometimes you don’t need to use colour at all to create the effect you want. I will say, to really work face shape magic I would use a combination of colour placement and hair extensions, but you have to have your colour techniques down before you start to add extensions!
Face Frame
Adding a face frame or lighter pieces around the front of the hair will widen the face, and adding depth will have the opposite effect. Cocktailed together using techniques such as Balayage, again doesn’t need to be with colour, we can create the same effect with hair extensions – we can get really clever with placement and start to pinpoint key points of the face such as cheekbones or the jawline, depending on the clients face shape to enhance, and highlight, what they have!
Angles
When creating a Balayage using hair extensions I always place them at an angle, and never go beyond a 20% elevation. This enables me to seamlessly blend my face framing shades with the rest of the hair, sweeping it around the ear and down into the back for perfect fluidity. Colour is helpful to draw the eye, widening and narrowing features, but adding extensions for volume or length
can also completely transform the face.
Fringe or Layers
If you were cutting a fringe or adding layers around the face we can add in I-Tip or Nano Hair Extensions – which I would always usually place around the face combined with other extension methods depending on the clients hair type – to add length ensuring that a fringe, or layers hit the points of the face that work best with the overall face shape.
Length
Of course hair extensions can also be used to add length, so if your client lands on long hair on the new Tik Tok filter its just a hair appointment away, as opposed to a 6 month growth process. Katy says, the benefit of extensions can be endless to clients and they don’t have to be too high maintenance depending on placement and how many they have.
