Have you ever wondered why, after 42 years the Alternative Hair is still going?
Organising the annual Alternative Hair Show is packed with stress and worry but despite this, Linda Holman tells us why she still supports the event and isn’t going anywhere.
Why do people still want to be part of the show? Why do audiences still love the buzz, inspiration and entertainment that Alternative Hair provides?
Speaking to the event’s Founder, Tony Rizzo, fundamentally it’s about raising money to fund research and support the families of sick children. The commitment he made all those years ago in memory of his son is as important today as it was then. I was working as a freelance PR for Sanrizz during the period when Tony and Maggie’s young son was suffering from Leukaemia and witnessing the pain they were going through, made it impossible not to support Tony.
Beyond That
The Show is about artistry, providing opportunity, it’s about Artistic Hairdressers coming together to create an amazing evening and express themselves in a totally unique way.
When so many of us spend half our lives with our heads buried in our small screens, a LIVE show remains special. For the younger generation of Hairdressers the live International Visionary Awards hold a special interest.
For Connection
Whether it is to be part of the Awards or to appear in the main show, it calls for an investment of energy, time and creativity for everyone participating. As AHS President Anthony Mascolo says, “Both socially, mentally and creatively, being part of a live event is like nothing else. It is amazing to watch the connection between the individuals and the teams that participate in the shows and see how they are both physically involved and fully immersed in what they are doing.”
For Passion
Over the years since he became Global President, Anthony and I have often wondered if they’ll be a show the following year, but Anthony always stops any doubts we might have, “People love it” he says, “Just look at all these teams…it’s about passion..”
All the key players behind the Alternative Hair Show have long been involved in hairdressing education and participated in hair shows in every corner of the globe. Their passion is instilled in everyone touched by the Alternative Hair Show, whether that happens to be one of the teams, a Sponsor, Award Finalist or someone in the audience.
EVOLUTION
Having said that, we all know things have to change…This is why we have called the 42nd Alternative Hair Show, EVOLUTION. It’s about both moving forwards and getting back to reality and about touching base and embracing growth. Ultimately it is about sharing our knowledge and our insights. It’s about hair and it’s also about people.
The outcome for children suffering from blood cancers has improved dramatically, but until 100% of sick children survive, how can we stop?
Distressingly one of the hospitals we support is the Ukraine’s largest children’s hospital in Kyiv, that was recently under attack… And that is why, we all carry on and I’ll be there this year.
