Award-winning Stylist Jason Hall and his son Jak have created a piece of hairdressing history this year.

Both of them were Finalists in the 2023 British Hairdressing Awards – Jason in the Scottish Hairdresser of the Year category, a title he won in 2919/2020, while Jak was in the final six in the running for Newcomer of the Year.

“As far as we know, this is the first time that father and son have been selected as finalists in the same year,” said Jason.

“Back in the day I tried for the Newcomer award four times but never got there. I’m extremely proud that Jak has got through to the finals. It’s one of the most important BHA awards.”

Jason opened his enormously popular Edinburgh salon in 1994 and quickly established his reputation as an ultimate professional with a passion for adventurous and creative, cutting-edge styling. Over the years he has won a host of awards and accolades and continues to be in demand for prestigious shows and photoshoots all over the world, working with many top models and photographers.

Both Jak, 23, and his younger brother Josef grew up in this lively and exciting environment. Jak started working in the bustling salon as a Saturday boy when he was just 15 and as soon as he left school he became a full-time member of the Jason Hall Hairdressing team.

“It was a natural progression for him.” says Jason. “Because I spend so much time, especially on Sundays and Mondays, doing photoshoots, Jak was always keen to get involved with these as well. He’s always been a part of it.

“He has been cutting hair now for five years, developing his creativity, and he has a real flair for it. He’s working at a lot of shows with me now and that’s led to him being asked to work with other people as well.

“We were doing a show in London last Thursday and a lot of people were asking about the possibility of him working with them. It’s great to see him getting credit in his own right.

“Most Newcomer Finalists tend to come from the big salon groups so it’s a nice achievement for a small, independent salon like ourselves to get through to the finals.”

Although he was so immersed in the world of hairdressing from an early age, Jak wasn’t initially convinced about following in his father’s footsteps, but is now totally committed to it and shares his passion for the industry.

“I’m really cool about it now,” he says.“ The more I do it, the more I like it. I enjoy the bustle of the salon and it’s exciting to be at the shows and photoshoots.”

Jak’s talented younger sibling Josef, 19, who is studying Photography at university, is also making a name for himself. Jason’s fully-equipped studio where his acclaimed collections are shot, has been the perfect background for Josef to develop his skills.

“Josef is becoming known as a photographer on the DJ scene,” says Jason. “He was noticed by a DJ who plays all over Europe and beyond to audiences of up to twenty thousand. He asked Josef to work with him and that led to our budding photographer going on the books of an important DJ agency.”

With both Jak and Josef forging ahead with their respective careers, has Jason set them on the path to creating a dynasty in the world of creative and pioneering hairdressing, sharing their talents and skills that go hand-in-hand?

“The plan is that at some time in the future, I will take a bit of a back seat and Jak and Josef can come to the fore in the business, coming up with their own ideas of what the future will hold,” Jason says proudly.
