L’Oreal Professionnel Fusion Tour with Marlon Hawkins
L’Oreal Professionnel took to the road this month with Guest Artist Marlon Hawkins, Artistic Director of Brooks & Brooks.
Visiting Leeds and Bristol before heading to the flagship L’Oreal Academy in central London, the tour gave an insight into Marlon’s creativity, the techniques he’s using to excite clients and the innovations he’s using to push his colour boundaries.
The theme running through the show was simplicity. “Small tweaks can make a big difference, you don’t always have to do something dramatic,” he explained. “Choosing the right products to work with is the key to creating the look you want. We are living in a time when innovation is giving us incredible products, such as L’Oreal Professionnel Dia Color and INOA. You can’t put a label on creativity, but you can find a formula that allows you to be creative.”
Marlon demonstrated working on box-coloured hair, keeping the integrity and condition while giving his model a seamless colour that she loved. “When we are working on a client you always want to create something different. What makes it creative are the colours you use and where you place them. It’s all about trust between colourist and client.”
L’Oreal Professionnel General Manager Ann-Marie Humphreys gave the audience an insight into new innovations launching in 2024, with a toolbox of colours and styling products to take your skills to another level. “Our products aren’t just created in a lab; they are tested by Pros for Pros.”
Androgyny and beautiful hair were also on display, with Marlon taking inspiration from David Bowie and ‘Mod Wife’, before he was joined on stage by three-times British Hairdresser of the Year Sally Brooks and business guru Jamie Brooks.
While they chatted about Marlon’s journey to Artistic Director, Sally offered this advice to the London audience: “Slow down. Do everything with detail and with intent. Finding the tiny details in something and making it beautiful takes time, so slow down and care about what you do.”
Jamie added: “Make sure you master your craft. We see a lot on social media, and everything is moving so fast; no one is owning anything they are just churning out lots of hair. You need to be really good at what you do so never take the easy route.”
