Lea Shaw’s Winter Blonde Recovery Tips
Sam Robinson

After the cold winter nights, blonde locks can often be left looking dry, brittle, and a little frazzled. But as the nights start to get brighter, so should your blonde!

Lea Shaw is an expert of blonding, with expertise knowledge on how to get the brightest, healthiest blondes. We chatted to Lea Shaw about how to get blondes looking brighter after the colder months.

Colder Months
Dry, brittle hair is the main culprit of the colder months. As the temperature drops, the air becomes drier, leaving the hair seriously lacking moisture, meaning the hair is often left looking dull, dry, and lifeless. The colder weather is especially damaging to hair that has been bleached, which is already more prone to breakage. Remember hydrated hair is healthy hair! When the hair is lacking hydration, the hair becomes more fragile, and this means more of those pesky split ends. For blondes, hydration is the key to getting your blondes looking brighter once more.

Nourish The Hair
“I’d recommend investing in a good shampoo and conditioner that nourishes the hair. JOICO’s Blonde Life Brightening Shampoo and Conditioner Duo is incredibly gentle on fragile blonde hair. It’s  nourishing, cleansing, and hydrating. This duo is infused with Arginine, a naturally occurring amino acid, that contributes to the overall strength of your locks, revitalising from root to tip with defensive properties. These are the products I use to revitalises blonde blocks – bright and beautiful every time!” – Lea.

Regular Trims
This is essential for keeping blonde hair looking fresh and healthy after the colder months. Getting a trim after bleaching the hair can help seal the ends and prevent breakage or damage. This is especially important when your client is blonde, as the hair has already been weakened over time, so trimming prevents further damage.

Aftercare Is Essential
“Bleaching the hair does damage it over time, but it your Clients follow the correct aftercare, their blonde will stay looking beautiful and bouncy for longer. I always recommend that my Client’s get a cut every 6 – 8 weeks to keep their hair looking its best. Client’s fear losing length, but in the long run, getting a regular trim will benefit the hair. Once split ends start to appear, the damage will continue to work its way up the stand, so getting a trim is essential to prevent further damage. So, listen to your Hairdresser when they tell you to get a cut!” – Lea.

Put Down The Heat Styling Tools!
The cold weather drains your hair of any moisture, as it causes the cuticle of the hair strand to lift. This results in the moisture not being able to seep into the hair, leaving the hair can be left feeling frizzy and dehydrated.

“Whilst heat styling tools seem like the quick fix to helping you achieve your desired look, excessive use can lead to damage and colour fading, so minimise heat styling as much as possible over the colder months. Embrace your natural texture or experiment with heatless styling. Heatless curls always work a charm.” If you do need to use heat styling tools, make sure you’re using a Heat Protectant Spray to prevent your hair from becoming damaged and becoming dull or brassy,”- Lea.
