HOW TO TRANSLATE FASHION WEEK TRENDS INTO THE SALON

HOW TO TRANSLATE FASHION WEEK TRENDS INTO THE SALON
Sam Robinson

Joana Neves at ALTERNA Europe discusses translating fashion week trends into the salon.

Inspo

‘Trends are there to inspire us. The beautiful, elegant shape created at the recent Fendi show was one of my favourites and it was an honour to be a part of this show and create these looks. The chic ponytails at Dior – so refined and graceful. Trends are created at the shows and then filter down to the consumer and to salon work. The A-symmetric shapes at Prada are very strong and a shape that many hairdressers love to create, and this asymmetric look could be something that we will be seeing in salon in a modified way very shortly.

Individuality

One trend that I have noticed, especially working on the shows at Fashion Week is Individuality. Today, we are respectful of every different type of hair texture, embracing and appreciating all textures. Our approach to textured hair has changed, we are working more with the client’s individual movement to enhance curls and textures.

Products

As a session stylist we take our inspiration from fashion and translate that into salon work. It’s so important to understand how comfortable the client is with the ‘trends’ and how commercial or pared back the trend needs to be and what we need to change for the trend to be appealing to clients. Products can really assist with creating new looks, working on texture and how to get a mirror like shine – that’s the fun part’- Joana Neves.
