ALTERNATIVE HAIR 2022

ALTERNATIVE HAIR 2022
Sam Robinson

Last Sunday Alternative Hair reached its 40 year milestone with a unique show entitled: Legends, held at the Troxy Theatre in Limehouse, East London. After 2 years of online, virtual shows, it was a wonderful feeling to once again be ‘live’ on stage, thanks to the wonderful support of the sponsors* and the creative hairdressing teams appearing in the show.

Annual Charity

Of course, the Alternative Hair Show is so much more than an annual charity hair show, intrinsically it’s about giving and sharing, inspiring and entertaining and importantly, raising funding for a variety of Leukaemia and Blood Cancer charities.

Leukaemia Research

Alternative Hair was born out of passion and love, the original show was created to raise money for Leukaemia Research in memory of Valentino Rizzo, Tony and Maggie Rizzo’s young son, who had sadly lost his life to blood cancer. That core aim and belief remains the same, but as the years have passed, this enduring event focuses on showcasing the artistry of hairdressing teams from every corner of the globe, as well as finding and promoting new talent, because Alternative Hair is not just about raising money, it’s also about raising the status of the hairdresser. The hairdressers showing their work on stage are absolute craftsmen, artists and visionaries. Beyond that, they are dedicated, and embrace the freedom of creativity afforded them by Alternative Hair.

Legends

This year, the show, entitled Legends, was made up of 14 teams that have supported Tony Rizzo over the years, once again showing the best of their best work. New to the show was The New Visionaries Show, a dedicated section encompassing the creative work of 18 hairdressers who had previously won the Alternative Hair Visionary Awards. (**Names of all teams at the bottom of the release.)

The final 3 places of the International Visionary Awards were announced during the show,
with Tony Rizzo and Alternative Hair Worldwide President, Anthony Mascolo, announcing the winners:

    • Avantegarde: winner: Lorenzo Marchelle, 1 st runner up: Raluca Horvat 2 nd runner up: Ana
      Kinchan
    • Cut & Colour: winner: Laurentiu Bostan, 1 st runner up: Ciaran Cannon, 2 nd runner up: Gianni
      Rando
    • Men’s: winner: Wei Wei Chuang, 1 st runner up: Brian Sanchis, 2 nd runner up: Christian Rios.

Sponsors

Without the magnificent support of sponsors and hairdressers, the show cannot happen – and that is why, each year, Tony reaches out to everyone in the wider hairdressing profession for vital support, so the show can once again happen. 40 years is indeed a milestone, but whilst there are still children who do not survive this awful disease, the work is not done. This year’s Alternative Hair Show raised £104,000.
