Alex Thaddeus: choosing products with better ingredients
We chatted with Alex Thaddeus from Alex Thaddeus Hairdressing about choosing the products with the right ingredients, and how to improve the products to be gentler to humans and the planet.
When choosing which products to stock, I always believe the more natural the better. Not only are these products less toxic, but they tend to be better for the hair’s overall health as well.
Natural Oils
Natural Oils and plant-based extracts such as Argan Oil and Coconut Oil or Aloe Vera and Green Tea can help nourish and condition the hair when colouring, whilst also being soothing to the hair and scalp.
Proteins
These are another great ingredient to look for when choosing the best products to stock. Proteins like Keratin and silk proteins can help strengthen and repair the hair during the colouring process, leading to less breakage and healthier feeling hair.
Ammonia
Whilst most dyes still do contain ammonia, I’d suggest trying low ammonia or ammonia-free formulas for colouring the hair. Whilst ammonia-based hair dyes do last longer, these low ammonia or ammonia-free formulas are less damaging to both the hair and scalp.
Sulfates
These can strip the hair of its natural oils, so by switching to sulfate-free formulas, your hair will be less irritated when colouring. Your client’s hair will be thankful for it!
Parabens
These are preservatives that are usually found in cosmetic products to product the growth of harmful bacteria and mould. Parabens have been linked to health concerns, such as an increased risk of cancer, whilst also having harmful effects to the environment.
Resorcinol
This is another ingredient to look out for when choosing which products to stock in your salon, as it has been linked to skin irritation and allergic reactions.
PPD
Another hair colour ingredient which causes allergic reactions is PPD (p-Phenylenediamine). When mixed with hydrogen peroxide, this harmful hair colour system can have lasting effects on the hair’s health.
Heavy Metals
Such as lead, mercury and arsenic are a huge culprit in damaging the hair’s health. These heavy metals are also harmful to human health and the environment so try avoiding them at all costs!
“By choosing professional hair colour brands with good ingredients, avoiding harmful chemicals, and supporting sustainable practices, we can help make hair colouring gentler for both humans and the environment,” – Alex.
