An Interview With Joana Neves, Editorial Director at ALTERNA

An Interview With Joana Neves, Editorial Director at ALTERNA
Sam Robinson

How did you get into hairdressing?

My mom is a hairdresser and has been for over 40 years, and although hairdressing was running in my veins, I actually hated the profession: my mom was always busy in the salon and never had a weekend free! I went to university to study Communication and Public Relations but shortly after I started my degree I got invited to be a hair model for a hairdressing show and I was amazed by the wonders hairdressers could actually do…then and there the spark happened!

You have worked at many International Fashion Week shows with esteemed global brands such as Dior, Chanel and Givenchy – how did you get into this line of hairdressing work and what has it taught you?

I got into session work by the hands of Neil Moodie. I was working at his and Paul Windle’s salon in London, former Windle and Moodie, and after a month where I did very little hairdressing because my command of the English language was really poor, I managed to show them my portfolio – their confidence in my skills as a hairdresser changed drastically. It was in no time that Neil’s agent contacted me to assist him at a Burberry show- my first ever fashion show! I’ve been doing it for 10 years now, and after all this time, I can say that amongst LOADS of other things that made me the professional I am now, it profoundly taught me to handle stress and pressure in extreme situations.

You have worked with some of the biggest names in the hairdressing world, including Guido Palau, Sam Mcknight, James Pecis and Syd Hayes – how did these opportunities come about?

Working in fashion, where competition and high standards are routine, thriving is not easy. Since my first season, I understood that I would learn something new in every test, every practice and every show that I’d do. I was always curious to how and why where the designers so famous and talented, being able to set the trends that were followed worldwide so I wanted to work with as many personalities as I could to enable me to grow and become more knowledgeable and confident. With time, you’ll get to know the agencies and the people that are in charge of assembling the teams and the opportunities start to come. Always keep in mind that you can be working for whichever brand, with whatever designer and have the most famous top model in the world sitting in your chair, but the most important thing is for you not to lose the focus on what you’re there to do, which is hair. With that mind-set, you’ll improve every day and hopefully you’ll be noticed. Whenever that opportunity arises, grab it and cherish it!

How did you come to hear about ALTERNA and start to work for the brand?

I first heard of ALTERNA through one of the most creative and amazing people I have had the chance to work with in the hairdressing world: Simon Ellis. He challenged me to be involved in ALTERNA’s education in Europe. I then started working very closely to Nikolas Tilaveridis (Education and Events Manager at ALTERNA Europe), another truly inspirational professional, and my path with ALTERNA started.

What sets ALTERNA apart from other brands?

ALTERNA is a unique brand. It offers some of the best premium products in our industry, which are gentle and nourishing to the hair, while taking care of our health and the environment. ALTERNA’s formulations are free of harsh chemicals and packed with potent natural ingredients, like Caviar and Botanical Caviar, and technologies that have a tangible, transformative effect on the hair. And, I really don’t want anyone to take my word for it, as I am a Brand Ambassador. That’s why I always encourage people to try for themselves, as it is the best way to understand and appreciate the products. But it’s not only about products! Working with the ALTERNA team is always great because we share a passion for the hairdressing craft, and we are very close. We have developed an honest, family-like relationship that allows me to fully express my creativity as a hairdresser.

What’s been your biggest highlights in your career?

Making it to Guido Palau’s core team for 7 years now.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is to make hair professionals understand the power they have in their hands, if their skills are honed with the right education.

Who is your biggest inspiration within the hairdressing industry?

Guido Palau – I feel blessed that I get to work and learn from a living legend.

What’s your favourite product/products by ALTERNA and why?

I absolutely love ALTERNA’s whole range. Every product is formulated with unique ingredients that are both premium and sustainable; this is proven by the amazing results the products can bring to your creations. I am currently obsessed with the Soaring High Volume Mist, from the My Hair. My Canvas. line – it gives hair an amazing long lasting, weightless volume effect, even on very thin hair!

Where do you see yourself and your career in 5 years’ time?

I don’t have any objective set for that time scale because I feel that I still have a lot to achieve and to learn where I am right now. Although, I see myself setting education standards in the future, where I hope I can help professionals reach their full technical potential and unlock their creativity!
