Janet Maitland celebrates 40 years
Local Durham hairdressing legend, Janet Maitland celebrated 40 years in business with an 80’s Disco and fundraiser at Hallgarth Manor Hotel.
About The Event
Over 150 guests gathered to party the night away, including local MP, Roberta Blackman-Woods, as the DJ played all the hits from when Janet started her first salon, Raffles, in 1979. Fast-forward four decades and Janet is best known for running three highly successful salons in Durham, being named Business Director of the Year at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards 2018 and collecting the Inspire Me Business Woman of the Year Award in 2017; not to mention her role as UK Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional’s Shaping Futures initiative.
Raising For Charities
Commenting on the evening, Janet said, “Wow what a night! Not only did we manage to raise over £1400 for two fantastic charities, Shaping Futures and St Cuthbert’s Hospice, but we also raised the roof with all our dancing. Hairdressers certainly know how to party!
Developing The Brand
“When I first began in hairdressing my salon was called Raffles; complete with cane furniture, 70’s chic and a record player of the floor. We were packed from day one and it was amazing. Overtime our brand developed and we became Janet Maitland Hair Excellence, but we never lost our sense of enjoyment.”
Inside The Evening
The evening started with a champagne reception, followed by charity raffle and disco. Continuing, Janet said, “From day one I wanted to empower women and having Company Directors Sandra Snowdon and Lisa Price beside me, throughout the journey, has helped me to achieve that goal. Sandra has trained hundreds of hairdressers to be independent stylists and Lisa is a constant source of inspiration. Thanks to hairdressing I have experienced the best career and made my dreams come true. I am so lucky to be in this industry and to have had such loyal clients and staff members. This party was our way of saying THANK YOU.”
Prizes for the raffle were provided by local companies – Cooper Durham BMW, The Three Horseshoes, Leamside, Poplar Tree Garden Centre, Shincliffe, The Hallgarth Manor Hotel, Pittington, Transform Gym, Gilesgate, The Durham Family Chiropractic, Gilesgate, Ebony Champagne Bar, Durham, The Dun Cow, Durham, Freeman’s Quay Leisure Centre, Durham, Ramside Hall Hotel Golf Club, Carville, Homer Hill Farm Shop, Rainton Gate, La Spaghettata, Durham, Schwarzkopf Professional.
