How To Swap Bleach for Extensions to Create the Perfect Balayage

How To Swap Bleach for Extensions to Create the Perfect Balayage
Sam Robinson

Balayage is a great option for all hair types and textures looking for that lightness and brightness, along with low maintenance longevity. But did you know its possible to have a bleach free Balayage by simply opting for hair extensions to create the look instead?

“Creating a Balayage with hair extensions is obviously a great option for any client who wants to avoid the commitment of bleaching their hair, but it also works really well for those who have existing colour on their hair but could never quite get light enough to achieve the look they were going for. It’s a great, low commitment version that you can wear and take out for as little, or as long of a time period as you’d like, giving clients a whole wealth of options,”- Katy Grimshaw, Spectrum One Hair Extensions Founder.

Bridging Tone
The key to a perfect Balayage blend with hair extensions is to nail your bridging tone. This is the colour you need to drag through the extensions to blend the base colour (the client’s natural colour) and the Balayage colour, blending the break between where the base colour stops and the extensions start. I would usually opt for half, to one whole shade lighter than either your base colour or your root colour, depending on how high you’re bringing your Balayage shade up the
hair, for your bridging tone.

Spectrum One Hair Extensions have pre-Balayaged options in their professional range to make life really easy, but Katy would still always recommend mixing multiple colours together for a custom
look.

“It depends on the client’s hair and the overall look you’re trying to achieve as to what you’re going to mix. Personally I reach for tapes as my go-to technique for this look, but you can definitely use wefts or Nanos as well. I love mixing colours together to get a seamless custom blend so I made sure that spectrum One hair extensions were available to purchase in 50 gram packs instead of large packs that are expensive and leave you with lots of her left over post blend.

When creating a balayage with a tape technique i would choose a soft brunette as my bridging tone which could be a flat, piano or mixed colour, then we could sandwich the pre-Balayaged tape with that, it all depends on the client;s hair but that’s an example!”- Katy.
