Creating a Destination Salon in the Highlands

KIKU Salon is quietly establishing itself as a destination for thoughtful, professional hairdressing in the Highlands.

At the heart of Kiku salon are founders, Artistic Director Paul Ralph and Creative Director Hiro Kudo.

Having worked in Brighton and London with Rush and Brooks & Brooks, Paul brings a foundation in precision cutting and fashion-focused, premium hair. In contrast, Hiro, originally from Japan and has experience in New York, brings a calm, methodical approach to work.

“Together those different journeys shape the salon’s identity,”– Paul.

The team is rounded out by talent from across Scotland. Sean, the barber, joined us from Glasgow. His skills speak for themselves and coming from a city with such a strong street fashion influence, he brings fresh energy and a new level of barbering to Inverness.

Nicola, our local talent, has over 20 years of experience in the city. She grounds the team with her knowledge of Inverness and, since joining KIKU, has embraced their ethos, developed her skills further, and is now thriving. Apprentices, Paulina and Paige, bring enthusiasm and fresh perspectives.

“We’re constantly sharing ideas, through meetings on trends or day-to-day conversations on the salon floor. Every member of the team contributes, and by combining our perspectives, we can blend precision, creativity, and international inspiration into something fresh yet grounded. At the heart of it is a shared vision: to ensure our clients receive innovative, forward-thinking hairdressing that feels personal and relevant,”
– Hiro.

The Founders love being part of the city and feel proud to contribute to its evolving identity. By supporting one another, promoting creativity, and celebrating quality, they’re helping shape Inverness into a destination people are proud to visit and live in.

The next chapter for KIKU begins with a refit of the salon in February next year. They’re also expanding the team and planning to share their skills nationally and internationally. Over the next two years, their goal is to open a second salon, growing KIKU carefully while maintaining the standards and experience our clients expect.
