#ColourFest: Safy Burton: The Colour Climb
Safy B of Safy B Salon, tells us about her journey in colour.
‘Colour is my passion. I live for it, love it and can’t get enough of it each and every day in life.
Over the past few years, I have been extremely fortunate to have developed a reputation or my colour work – both within the industry and out with. From clients to industry peers alike, everyone knows me for my work and the amazing transformations that I love to share on social media. It makes me so proud.
First Balayage
I recently shared a photo of one of my very first balayage’s that I created, it was something I was beyond proud of and when I shared the picture it showed me how far I have come since that time, and how much my skills have evolved, as well as me as an individual. This is the moment I realised, just how far on my journey I have become and I couldn’t believe how much I have progressed.
Technical Skill
Colour, as many will know, is a very technical skill – one that many are a little apprehensive about learning. However, with the right education, guidance and support you too can create something incredible. My experiences and journey so far have been incredible, and I am delighted to share with you some advice on how to climb that colour ladder.
Invest in Education
Education in colour is the foundations – it will allow you to learn the classic colour knowledge and skills, which is then a platform for you to build on. Throughout your career, I can not recommend colour education enough, in fact, education in general.
There is always something to learn in this industry and you can have enough education. With the world moving at such a fast pace, new trends, techniques and products are unveiled and this requires continuous education. Even know, I still invest in myself, as this allows me to progress and evolve in my career and journey as a whole.
Experiment – it’s ok!
This is the fun part – get creative and experiment to your hearts desire. This is the exact way new trends and techniques are uncovered so why not try something a bit different? With colour, the hair is your canvas, so on your days off or quiet periods, grab a dolls head and try something new or something different to help you get to your end result. The most amazing results come from experimenting, so go on and give it a try!
Make Mistakes
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – they happen. Instead, if something doesn’t work out as planned own up to it and then find out the best way to rectify. Please remember that it is ok to make mistakes – honestly, they happen to every single one of us. Sometimes things just don’t go the way you expect them and that’s ok. See it as another educational session on how to avoid it in the future.
Ask Your Peers
Never, ever be afraid to ask questions. Honestly, this is how our industry evolves and even know, top colourists still ask questions too. I love nothing more than sharing my colour knowledge with my fellow colourists – helping others through their journey is amazing and I love to be a part of it. Never think a question is too silly or simple, just ask away! This is also a great way to connect with those who share the same passions and values, which results in you making new friends!
Shadow or Assist
There is no better way to learn than learning on the job, so why not assist or shadow a colourists in the salon or reach out to your favourite colourist and ask if there is any chance of learning from them. I’m a firm believer if you don’t ask you don’t get so put it out there!’ – Safy B.
