Rethink Your Laundry Habits
Nilofer Aydinli, Managing Director at Enki Towels explains why it’s time for salons to build some better habits.
This Earth Month, we’re exploring salon laundry practices and how salon businesses can reduce both their environmental impact and operational costs. From smarter washing cycles to improved storage, there are several practical changes salons can make to become more efficient and sustainable.
There are several key considerations for owners and teams to reduce the environmental footprint of salon laundry.
Full-Load Washing
Avoid running machines with only a few items. Washing full loads helps reduce water and energy use per item and improves overall efficiency.
Temperature Appropriate Washing
With hygiene in mind, not all items require the same wash temperature. Lightly soiled items such as hair capes used during cutting or styling may be suitable for lower-temperature washes when paired with effective detergents. However, reusable towels and linens that come into direct contact with skin, moisture, or chemical products should be washed at appropriate higher temperatures in line with hygiene requirements to help reduce bacteria and prevent cross-contamination.
Consider Disposable Towels
To avoid added laundry, disposable towels are a great option over reusable towels . Alongside reducing laundry, they will also save salons money on energy use, water use and staff time, allowing members of the team to focus on their clients instead of extra laundry.

Improve Storage Practices
Maintain clean, well-organised, and easily accessible storage areas for linens and towels. Proper storage helps maintain hygiene standards and reduces unnecessary re-washing caused by contamination.
Choose Effective Laundry Detergents
Select detergents that are appropriate for salon use and capable of removing oils, dyes, and product residue effectively. Getting the wash right the first time helps reduce repeat cycles and unnecessary energy and water use.
Invest in Energy-Efficient Machines
Modern washing machines often include eco-friendly cycles designed to reduce water and energy consumption. While the upfront cost may be higher, energy-efficient machines can deliver long-term savings and help extend the lifespan of laundry through gentler, optimised wash programs.
