Smarter Colour Thinking for Autumn

Smarter Colour Thinking for Autumn
Sam Robinson

As the season shifts, there’s a growing demand for colour that looks dimensional, reflects light naturally, and most importantly, keeps the hair healthy.

For Sarah Spiers, Colourist, Educator and Founder of Chaulk Education, this shift highlights the importance of science-led colour work. Warm vs Cool.

“It’s not enough to just know what looks good. Stylists need to understand why — why certain tones flatter the skin, why some pigments last longer, and why fibre integrity determines everything about the final result,”– Sarah.

Sarah’s Autumn Hair Tips

1. Start with Science, Not Swatches
Healthy hair is always the starting point.Understanding porosity, elasticity, and pigment history allows you to make informed decisions about tone direction and product choice. When stylists assess the canvas first, the results are more predictable, balanced, and durable, regardless of whether the client’s goal is warm or cool.

2. Warm vs Cool: Make It Intentional
Every shade exists somewhere on the warm–cool spectrum. Warm tones, think gold, caramel, and copper, add glow and softness, while cool tones, ash, mocha, and espresso, create a more polished and refined feel. The key is being intentional. When you know the underlying pigment, you can decide whether to enhance or neutralise it. That’s what determines if the colour feels glowing and autumnal or sleek and understated.

3. Reduce Bleach, Increase Control
Bleach has its place, but this season, clients are asking for softer, healthier results. High-lift tints and controlled lifts often give a cleaner, more natural result than an all-over bleach. It’s about working smarter, not harder, and keeping the cuticle intact for better tone retention.

4. Build Dimension Through Placement
Autumn tones come alive with thoughtful placement. Dimensional colour is all about layering. Techniques like lowlights, tonal melting, and colour mapping create richness that moves with the light. It’s subtle, sophisticated, and grows out beautifully.

5. Keep It Brand Neutral
Real artistry comes from understanding principles, not products. When stylists learn the science — pigment theory, porosity, tone control — they’re free to work with any brand and still achieve exceptional results. That’s the kind of education that empowers creativity.
