ROAR HAIR: Top tips for being a great boss and motivating your team
Brian Leo McCallum, Owner of Roar Hair & Beauty shares his tips on motivating your team.
- Give Praise – A little thank you goes a long way! Always give your team praise when they have done a job/task well. Although small, the team will feel appreciated and motivated, and they will continue to work hard and do their best.
- Reward Your Team – Going beyond a thank you and rewarding your team who have gone the extra mile, whether it be with free products, vouchers or a bonus, is a great way to show your team your appreciation for their hard work and keep them motivated at work. Rewards don’t need to be huge, even a gift of flowers or chocolates is a nice way to show your team your appreciation for their efforts.
- Have An Open-Door Policy – This is so important to show your team they have your support and that they can come to you should any issues arise. It will also prevent the team from bottling their feelings up and being unhappy at work. Instead, it will encourage team members to open up where you may be able to help overcome any problems they may have or put a plan in place to support them further.
- Progression Opportunities – Many team members do not want to stand still; they want to progress in their career and work towards the next level. Having progression opportunities is incredibly advantageous to ensure your team are always driven, ambitious and working hard to be their best to get to the next level in the business. This will also give you the opportunity to grow your team and your clientele.
- Communicate With Your Team – Communicating with your team, letting them know of any salon updates/plans/news is highly beneficial when it comes to making your team feel like they are a valued and a vital part of the salon. Daily communication will also allow you to discuss any concerns for the day or any salon offers/promotions you may have launching soon, ensuring your team are kept in the loop at all times and on top of their game for the day/weeks ahead.
- Provide Constant Training – One of the main ways to keep your team motivated is by offering them constant, new training, that will allow them to learn new skills and that will keep them inspired and passionate in their job role. Consider having a calendar of training opportunities throughout the year that is available to your team, with opportunities both in the salon and out-with, and that cover all areas from cutting and colour courses to customer service and retail training.
- Set An Example – To be a great boss, you must set an example for your team and be the best you can be. Always give 110% customer care to your clients, throw yourself into as much training as you can to always refresh and update your skills, and have a positive presence in your salon that your team are inspired by.
