Neil Moodie’s SS24 Trends Round-Up with Hairstory Styling Tips

Neil Moodie’s SS24 Trends Round-Up with Hairstory Styling Tips
Sam Robinson

We’ve asked Neil Moodie, top editorial stylist and founder of the Neil Moodie Studio, for his run down of the top trends for SS24.

Plus we have some styling tips for each, courtesy of Wes Sharpton, Lead Brand Educator at Hairstory.

1. Mid-Length Haircuts

Embracing mid-length hair will be a hit in 2024, particularly with a flicky 90s-style blow dry, adding a touch of vintage chic to the look.

STYLE IT with Hairstory Powder, a great product to create a perfect voluminous finish, without the need to backcomb, it will also refresh your hair and add volume without aerosol or talc. With your hair down, poof some of this product right at the crown and work your hair backwards. It absorbs oil and boosts volume to extend the life of a blowout too – so it’s generally a really great way of keeping the mid-length looking flicky and fresh! RRP £37.05

2. Embracing Natural Hair

The focus in 2024 is on healthy, natural hair. Say goodbye to over-processed locks and lengthy waits between haircuts. It’s all about self-love—whether through a significant cut, returning to your natural roots, or embracing your curls, the clean, natural look is here to stay.

STYLE IT with Hairstory Hair Balm. For those with curly hair but who want a more relaxed wavy look for 2024, work some Hair Balm into freshly washed hair (I recommend a detergent-free hair cleanser, like New Wash). Take large sections of the hair and with a fine-toothed comb, separate hair into sections twisting as you go from the root to the ends. Allow to air dry and you’ll have a more relaxed look. You’ll also find that it will add moisture, embracing your natural hair without feeling over-gelled. If your hair’s feeling a little over-processed it will revive it – perfectly imperfect curls! RRP £37.05

3 & 4. The Micro Bob and Box Bob

The Bob is back again and one evolution for this year is the Micro Bob, set to be a major trend for 2024, one hundred years on from when it was first worn by the original flapper girl, silent movie star and dancer Louise Brooks. It’s essentially the shortest bob before entering short hair territory, resting delicately between the jawline and cheekbone, grazing the bottom of the ear. This style, which was also popular in the late 80s and early 90s, radiates charm and cuteness. With the option to pair it with a fringe, whether at eyebrow length or shorter, it offers a timeless appeal. As it grows out, you can explore various other bob styles too.

Then there is the Box Bob, a contemporary twist on the timeless bob. Characterized by a sharp, box-shaped cut with clean lines and no layers, this style, also referred to as the “power bob,” is embraced by influencers like Hailey Bieber and Elsa Hosk. Its versatility shines as it can be worn with a sleek or curly finish, making it super chic.

STYLE IT with Hairstory Hair Oil, which will help create that all important shine, softening the hair and reducing frizz. All elements that are key to making the Micro and the Box Bob work. You’ll only need a few drops and it can be used daily. There’s also a delicious blend of 8 essential oils that will repair and nourish the hair – and smell lovely. RRP £35.15.

5. The Grown Out French Bob is chic and effortless

It incorporates the classic French Bob adding a modern twist by allowing the hair to grow out past the jawline. The result is a versatile, edgy, and low-maintenance hairstyle that can suit a variety of face shapes and hair textures. It’s pretty low maintenance unlike traditional bobs that require frequent trims to maintain shape, the grown-out version offers more forgiveness when it comes to upkeep. To maintain the Grown Out French Bob, regular trims are still necessary to prevent the ends from looking unkempt and to maintain a healthy appearance. However, the longer length means that the intervals between trims can be extended, reducing the overall maintenance required.

STYLE IT with Hairstory’s Undressed, which will help you get that slightly undone and natural look. If your hair already has an existing texture spray Undressed directly onto the hair, scrunch and diffuse it in. If the hair is naturally straight and mid-length, use irons to create an initial curl before misting with Undressed. Finally, twist the curls to relax them and achieve the perfect effortless wave. RRP £39.90

6. Birkin Bangs
The trendy shaggy outgrown bang, a contemporary twist inspired by Jane Birkin and modernised by Suki Waterhouse, is set to dominate 2024, potentially surpassing the beloved curtain bang.

STYLE IT with some Hairstory Lift, which will add just the right amount of ‘lift’ to achieve the look, which like Jane Birkin herself is cool, but effortlessly chic and stylish. It will create weightless and workable hair with volume without weighing it down. Apply to wet hair before heat styling, then section off and lightly spritz once or twice from root to mid-strand, continue sectioning and spraying throughout your head. Little hack – it will also refresh day-two hair if you do it before heat styling again. RRP £39.90

Colour Trends

1. Champagne Blonde

Anyone who’s been having highlights or balayage, with ashy tones, golden is now in. All you have to do is change the tone of your hair to get this flattering and expensive looking colour. Tell your Stylist you want to go for a honey caramel vibe, and they will talk you through what’s possible and how to take your previous colour to this gorgeous gold.

2. Baby Balayage

This year is all about embracing the return of “the baby balayage” trend, marked by a more understated and sophisticated approach. The heart of 2024’s hair colour fashion is subtlety. We’re talking about delicately hand-painted highlights, just at the tips of your locks, creating a mesmerizing, naturally dimensional look that’s both chic and effortless. This trend is a game-changer, offering a stylish yet natural appearance that’s bound to turn heads! Please note this trend is supplied by Cyd Charisse, Contributor for Hairstory.

MAINTAIN IT with Purple Color Boost, Hairstory’s game-changing answer to purple shampoo. It offers a healthier way to achieve bright and brass-free colour, without stripping the hair like a traditional purple shampoo would. It’s designed to be added to New Wash cleansing cream routines whenever toning is required, and features a unique botanical complex that perfectly complements the gentle-yet-powerful combination of colour-preserving actives in New Wash. It goes without saying that brassiness is not what the Champagne Blonde and Baby Balayage trends are about – so a purple cleanser that is good to your hair and scalp is key. RRP: £58. Set includes; Purple Color Boost 0.35oz, New Wash 8oz, refillable jar, whisk and scalp brush.
