The Fellowship held their Afro Hair Workshop last month at Junior Green Salon in London, giving Fellowship members the chance to build on their afro hair skills with the help of some of the industry’s most accomplished masters.

Junior Green from Junior Green Salon, Natalie Joseph from Hype, Michelle Thompson from Francesco Group, Lisa Farrall from Wig London and Wayne Shorter-Campbell from Errol Douglas Salon were the experts on hand to guide the delegates. Each expert was given 2-3 delegates to work with, who expressed their areas of weakness and things they wanted to work on and each delegate had brought their own model along to practice on in. Common issues and questions were around cutting the hair in its natural form and techniques on shampooing, blow-drying and styling for different types of hair textures.

Lisa Farrall says, “I started WIG LONDON HAIR ACADEMY as there was a huge gap in the industry for courses that specialise in fashion work and afro hair, so it’s great to see so many hairdressers taking the time to learn skills in Afro hair! Hairdressers should be able to work with all hair types and textures and no one should be turned away from a salon due to their hair type.”

Michelle Thompson says, “Considering afro hairdressing is not a common skill within the industry, the standard of the evening was great with most hairdressers fine-tuning their existing skills. All of their areas of concern and weakness was just down to a lack of knowledge so it was great to have a chance to teach them about afro hair. It’s fantastic that the Fellowship hold this event to open the market up in the industry more!”
