PATRICK CAMERON’S FILM LAUNCH IN CANNES

PATRICK CAMERON’S FILM LAUNCH IN CANNES
Fiona Ward

When long hair maestro, Patrick Cameron invited Ian Morton, Vice President of International Promotions at 20th Century Fox to attend his Modern Vintage show at Salon International, little did he know he would be commissioned to design and style the hair for the launch of the new DreamWorks Animation’s movie, Trolls, in front of the Carlton Pier at the Cannes Film Festival.

From the creators of Shrek comes the smartest, funniest, most irreverent animated comedy of the year! Trolls sing and dance their way into theaters in 2016. Debuting globally this October and November, Trolls will introduce audiences to a world filled with joyous unforgettable characters. The movie tells the story of the overly optimistic Princess Poppy who must enlist the help of a hilariously grumpy survivalist troll named Branch to rescue an unusual assortment of her friends. Together, they embark on a comedic journey filled with epic adventures and original songs. The film for the first time tells the story behind the beloved Trolls and their gravity defying and colorful hair. Setting out on an epic adventure that takes Poppy and Branch far beyond the only world they have ever known, their quest will test their strength and reveal their true colors – with no shortage of musical mash-ups along the way!

Following various meetings with 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks along with a special briefing held in London by CEO of DreamWorks Animation, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Patrick and his hand-picked team of experts including couture designer Marco Erbi and makeup artist Daniel Kolaric worked non-stop for over four months creating show-stopping hair, make up and costumes for the launch. Taking inspiration from glamorous and sophisticated hair and fashion along with the movie’s key characters, Patrick and Marco have designed costumes and wigs, perfectly colour matched, ensuring each of the models are in the same colour from head to toe.  For the show, Patrick created the Trolls gravity defying, larger than life colourful hair, on 10 Amazonian models, who sashayed along the Carlton Pier to introduce the two of the stars from the movie, Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick.

Patrick explains his involvement in the launch. “Working with the creators and directing team has been the most fantastic experience. The opportunity to present a Patrick Cameron Hair Show at the 2016 Cannes film festival is one I’ll never forget.

“I was asked to create ten looks that would work for ten glamorous models on the Red Carpet, taking the Troll hair look to a whole new level of fun and sophistication! But, it’s not just a matter of putting some fun wigs on a model! Each look had to be carefully planned and constructed to be completely special with a one-of-a-kind feeling. The wigs I used had to be ordered from around the world to get the correct colours needed, with each wig having a hand knotted laced front to give the illusion the model’s hair was real. I also needed one special rainbow wig which I had made by the London-based Big Wig Company.

“To create each look took over 3-4 hours of styling – layer by layer, each wig required a specially constructed base that needed to be no heavier than the overall wig itself. This was extremely important as the models needed to wear the wig for 2 or 3 hours at a time. Each wig also had to be durable enough to be reused for other red carpet events and Troll premieres around the world.

“My Art director Marco Erbi created the overall look of what each model wore and each dress was handmade by Marco with matching jewelry, all colour matched to each wig. The project has taken team Cameron over four months, with constant co-ordination from my business partner Susan Callaghan, Art director Marco Erbi, choreographers Kelly & Stacy Franklin, the DreamWorks and Fox PR production company Media Circus and myself, to arrive at the final collection which we presented to the worlds press at the world famous Cannes Film Festival.”
