GOT 5: Social Media, Self-Doubt & Showing Up Online

GOT 5: Social Media, Self-Doubt & Showing Up Online
Joanne Charlton

Social media. Love it or loathe it, there’s no denying its grip on our daily lives. For those in the hair and beauty industry, it can feel like a relentless race – one where glossy content, perfect poses and high engagement are held up as the benchmarks for success. But Holly Fairley, colour expert and content creator, is cutting through the noise with an approach rooted in realness, resilience and relatability.

From overcoming camera shyness to embracing the messy, magical chaos of real life, Holly opens up about her journey – and the five truths that have shaped her social media strategy.

1. From Fear to Confidence: Facing Online Criticism

Let’s face it: social media can be brutal. But for Holly, it’s also been unexpectedly empowering.

“Sharing my work online helped me push past my fear of being on camera and exposed to criticism. Sure, there have been tough moments where the negativity hit hard, and I thought about walking away. But I remind myself—even negative engagement is still engagement.”
By zooming out and focusing on the bigger picture, Holly reframed the criticism and found confidence in her own voice and style.

2. Why the Real Me Performs Best

In a digital world of filters and facades, Holly’s honesty cuts through.

“I’m a mum. I live in my tracksuit, hair up, no makeup. In the beginning, I thought I had to show a ‘perfect’ version of myself to fit in online. But that wasn’t sustainable—or real.”
Her content shifted when she embraced her authentic self. The messy bun, the everyday chaos, the unfiltered truth.

“Half your audience might love a curated feed, but the other half is craving connection. I focus on being that real person they can relate to.”
3. Stop the Scroll, Stop the Excuses

When life gets hectic (and when isn’t it?), it’s easy to put content creation on the back burner. But Holly challenges that mindset.

“We’ve all said it: ‘I don’t have time,’ ‘I’m too busy.’ But they’re just excuses. You’ll always find reasons to delay. The key is to carve out even a small amount of time—15 minutes can make a difference.”
Her advice? Stop comparing, start showing up, and remember: everyone’s journey looks different behind the scenes.

4. Consistency is Queen

One of Holly’s biggest learnings? Show up consistently, even when it feels like no one’s watching.

“I posted three times a day on TikTok for ages. That’s what got me noticed. Social media is unpredictable—some posts flop, others fly. But never delete. There’s value in every piece of content, even if it’s just learning what works.”
And don’t forget to engage.

“Reply to comments. Support other creators. It’s social media for a reason—connection is everything.”
5. Turning Clicks Into Clients

These days, your next client is more likely to discover you online than through word of mouth.

“People are scrolling before booking. They want to see your work, understand your vibe, and feel confident about sitting in your chair.”
That means your content needs to reflect your style, your standards and your personality.

“You don’t need fancy gear—just content that tells your story. I spend time editing to make sure what I post feels me. But ultimately, the client experience comes first. If you focus on creating real value, the following (and the bookings) will follow.”

The Final Word?
Forget perfection. Authenticity, consistency and courage are what cut through online – and Holly Fairley is living proof.
