Rebecca Parker

Celebrating exceptional hairdressing talent from across the world, Wella’s coveted International TrendVision Awards reached a new high this year in London, a city synonymous with diversity, openness and individuality.

Where?

The event, which took place this year on 14 October 2017 as part of Salon International at London’s Excel, attracted almost 2,000 guests from across the world to witness 82 competitors from 44 countries showcasing their color craft and creativity to become international hair champions.

A True Celebration

Michelle Mason, Senior Vice President Education & Professional Development, Coty Professional Beauty said: “Wella TrendVision is a true celebration of color, craft and inspiration, a spectacular platform for creativity where up-and-coming stylists and colorists are fully recognized. It’s a time for the Wella Family to come together; to share, collaborate, co-create and shape the future of hair and beauty.”

The Finalists

Celebrating the Future of Hairdressing: The 15th International TrendVision Awards
Finalists were chosen from a field of 8,000 applicants, and won their local National TrendVision Awards to secure their coveted place in London. They each prepared a creative tour de force to demonstrate their skills in their specific field: Color Vision or Creative Vision.

Each category included four awards – Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze – and also recognized the ‘People’s Choice’ for the finalist receiving the most votes through digital and social channels, which this year had an incredible 77,000 votes. For the Color Vision category – led by head judge and Wella Professionals Global Color Ambassador, Andreas Kurkowitz, entrants were scored on their color technique and overall look and vision.

Wella Lifetime Achievement Award

Wella Professionals was pleased to award the Lifetime Achievement Award to Annie Humphreys, “The Mother of Modern Hair Color” and a true visionary in her field. She first met Vidal Sassoon in 1958 when he bought the London salon she worked in and asked if she wanted to stay on. She was the only one who said yes, and she made hair history. What Vidal Sassoon did for haircuts, she did for color; with her creative, ground-breaking and trendsetting work, she took hair color out of the back room and right up onto center stage.

Vidal Sassoon’s Annual Collections

Annie created unique color designs that complemented the legendary geometric cuts and made a statement. She pioneered the use of foil and painted freehand to highlight, long before everyone knew what the word “balayage” meant. In every class and on every stage, she taught her techniques, shared her formulas and demonstrated her methods. She was famously tough, disciplined and precise. And in her 50-year career, she taught generations of hair colorists what professional color could be.

What’s next for TrendVision?

Over the years, the TrendVision format has been updated to improve its reach and impact, such as introducing the Creative Vision category and People’s Choice awards. Importantly, the rise of digital engagement has enabled us to shine the light on hairdressing talent and reach more people than we could have ever imagined – 31 MM last year!

Encouraged by these amazing achievements, it’s time again for Wella Professionals to lead the way in bringing even more value to the hairdressing world by taking the International Trend Vision Award to the next level. Wella Professionals is working now on a new format to expand our search for talents and help them grow, develop and go beyond their comfort zone even more, to ultimately show our industry and beyond how beautiful the hairdressing craft is.
