Re-defining Beauty with Miss Great Britain

Re-defining Beauty with Miss Great Britain
Sam Robinson

This week Leicestershire hairdresser Barrie Stephen joined a stellar line-up of professionals at the top of their chosen fields, to judge the Miss Great Britain competition.

The Line-Up

Alongside multi-award-winning Barrie Stephen was Saffron Hart, Miss Great Britain 2017; head judge Sally-Ann Fawcett, author of the top selling Beauty Pageant book series ‘Misdemeanours’; Matt Fiddes an internationally respected martial arts and fitness expert and former bodyguard to Michael Jackson; Ruth Deane, editor of EM group: Model and Talent publication.

The Judging Process

Commenting on the day, Barrie Stephen said, “The judges were asked to look beyond the image and choose a winner based on the girls’ stories and values. It was a tough task as everyone in the room was a worthy contender with a passion for making a difference to the world they live in. As judges we had to scrutinize and look deep at the person to choose our Miss Great Britain.

A Career Highlight

“I had no idea what to expect when I was invited to be part of this event, but it was one of the most surreal and exciting highlights of my career so far. I enjoyed it as it reminded me of how important it is to change your perspective, keep an open mind and get out of my comfort zone every so often. It was a huge career highlight for me. Too often beauty pageants are such stereotypes, but what I loved was how these girls were shaking it up, being disruptive and re-defining beauty – the message was very much, beauty within.”

The Format

The format of the judging included hearing personal revelations and stories about the struggles these girls had faced; including issues with anxiety, bullying, social media trolling and eating disorders.

Providing A Voice

Continuing Barrie said, “These girls are so strong, especially how determined they all were to overcome and break-free from the struggles they had faced. It was wonderful to see and be part of. It was clear to see the confidence and growth the girls had at just being part of this competition, that I can now appreciate 100% why Miss Great Britain is so brilliant. Not only is it a great platform for charity fundraising, which is also one of the criteria, but it provides these girls with a voice to make a difference.”

And The Winner Is…

Previous judges have been Duncan Bannatyne, Jake Quickenden and Danielle Lloyd. The winner chosen to represent Great Britain was Miss Bristol, Kobi-Jean Cole – a 23-year old Administrator. The event took place at Athena in Leicester on the 14th September 2018. Miss Bristol will be appearing on national and regional TV this week.
