Hair moulded into the shape of a hat, cartoon silhouettes and big, big shoulders - where else could you find this motley crew of inspirations and styles - except at London Fashion Week.
The schedule began on Friday and included one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the week - the Central Saint Martins MA catwalk show. Sponsored by L’Oréal Professionnel, the show provided a glimpse into the up-and-coming British designers from the prestigious college - previous graduates include Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane. The hair was left simple, but scruffy. Angelo Seminara and the L’Oréal Professionnel Portfolio team provided interesting pony-tails with cute boyish cuts for the guys. On Saturday Angelo had an even bigger audience when he worked on the Vivenne Westwood Red Label show at Olympia in Hammersmith. The hairstylist tailor-made the looks to match each model's individual style. Using products from the Texture Expert line, he created big styles, full of body with a dishevelled edge.
The majority of shows took place in the main stage, located in a glorious setting outside the Natural History Museum. However, some of the more up-and-coming designers debuted their autumn/winter 09 collections at the Vauhall Fashion Scout stage in Baden Powell House. Emerging talent came in the form of Alexander Groover, Nico D, Horace and Hemyca to name but a few. Alexander's collection focused on black, billowing silk in unique shapes and designs. Tim Furssedonn provided sudo bobs and elegant shapes on behalf of sponsor Toni & Guy. The hair was blow-dried smooth and then pinned under.
Romeo Pires' collection, again led by Tim Furssedonn, provided an interesting slant on the modern pony-tail by creating a mask-like effect on the face. Summer Holiday was the theme of the show and it featured high volume dresses and jumpsuits with a mixture of light and heavy fabrics. The hair was pulled forwards and fixed in a simplistic natural knot below the chin.
On the main stage Betty Jackson provided wearable looks with high waists and bold knitwear, whilst hairstylist Cos Sakkas, from Toni & Guy blow-dried hair straight, parted on the side and pulled into a tight ponytail at the crown. Using a tint brush and bowl, gel was painted onto the hair to create an extreme gloss and controlled look. Hairspray was then sprayed directly onto the hair coating it further , and then sections of the ponytail were ironed to create a very solid, almost cardboard like effect. The hair was then rolled into a chignon.
Nico D's show displayed some funky avant-garde looks, with Toni & Guy stylist Efi Davies created a hat-style look. The hair was gelled, then combed upwards and secured to make it as sleek as possible. A blonde hairpiece was then arrange at the top of the head, resting on the crown. A coloured piece of hair was secured in the middle (in a colour to match the model's outfit). To finish off netting was arranged over the whole up-do and then pinned in place to create a hat-like effect
The Jacob Kimmie show at the Gore Hotel, featured dishellved hair with plenty of volume. Styled by Jo Creed Brown at the Trevor Sorbie Team and supported by L’Oréal Professionnel, the hair was pinned back with messy strands and adorned with huge flower pieces made from black or white netting to create height on top of the head.
