The volcanic eruption in Iceland has effectively put much of the country at a standstill and is costing the economy billions. Already, here at Salon Business we are feeling the ripple affects of the problem as clients struggle to make it back to the UK and weekend press trips were cancelled.
BA has estimated that the airspace closure is costing between £15m and £20m per day, but hundreds of other industries are also suffering. The salon sector has been hard hit. Cosmoprof Bologana, the biggest hair and beauty show in the world kicked off last week (April 15th) and it appears that hundreds of industry figures and representatives are now stranded in the Italian city unable to fly home because of the airspace ban. Redken had to cancel a scheduled trip to Marrakech for the brand’s Global Business Summit, due to kick off on Sunday after the ban made departure from Heathrow impossible.
The airlines have discussed the possible reopening some airports, with a limited amount of flights scheduled on Tuesday. However, the long-term affects of the ban are more worrying. The latest figures show that the ban could cost the economy £2billion.
