Essential Looks University Collaboration

Essential Looks University Collaboration
Sam Robinson

For the 17th year, Schwarzkopf Professional salon Hensmans in Northampton have collaborated with the Northampton University fashion and textile students. This year they have worked with the second-year students and gave them a brief back in January of creating a clothing collection based on Schwarzkopf Professional’s Spring Summer 18 Essential Looks: Reinventing Hair.

An Absolute Joy

“With a long-standing collaboration of 17 years it is great to get the opportunity to work with the university of Northampton fashion students in this way. The course is amazing and working alongside lecturer Jane Mills is an absolute joy. The students have all worked really hard and we are incredibly impressed with the work they have created.” Says Gemma Hensman Director- Hensmans Salons.

The Task

The university students worked in teams, picking one of the sub-collections from Reinventing Hair, Beyond Borders, Random Rebel, Real Me and Royal TakeOver, to then base a clothing line on it. During the project, each team was able to shoot a key item from their collection with a professional photographer, makeup artist and hair stylists from Hensmans to dress and style the hair, creating their own Essential Looks inspired model image.

The Results

The finished results were amazing, and it was fascinating to hear the student’s ideas and inspiration behind their collections and how they got to their finished items. The project ended with a panel of expert judges picking a team to win an esteemed prize from Hensmans. Judging the competition were Hensmans’ Director Gemma Hensman, Hensmans Group Creative Director James Campbell, PR Senior Account Executive Emilie Scott from LWPR and Marketing Manager and Technical Advisor for Schwarzkopf Professional Marina Fallahi and Jamie Farrar.

The Winners

Picking team 3, who were inspired by the Real Me collection, as their winners, Gemma Hensman says: “We felt this team really took on the brief and the theme of Real Me and made it their own by talking about real issues that surround us in society, such as body image and trolling thanks to social media. Yet still keeping the look, cut and feel of the clothing very true to the brief.”

What Next?

The winning team will receive a professional photoshoot, with a professional makeup artist and hair stylists courtesy of Hensmans and Schwarzkopf Professional, so watch this space for collection images!
