5 Minutes With JAY BIRMINGHAM

5 Minutes With JAY BIRMINGHAM
Sam Robinson

We caught up with Jay Birmingham, Celebrity Stylist of Jay Birmingham Hair to talk all things hair. Discover how he got into hairdressing, and pick up some tips if you’re an aspiring Hairdresser.

How did you get into hairdressing?

I was always interested in hair and beauty from a young age. When I left school, I went to work in the bank and whilst I earned good money there, I knew that it wasn’t my passion and it wasn’t something I wanted to do forever. My colleague was leaving to open her own salon and asked me to go with her. It was such a risk but I knew it would be worth it to follow my passion and I am so glad I took that leap of faith.

Tell us about your career path

I worked with my friend in her salon for about a year but unfortunately the salon then ceased trading. I had grown so fond of hairdressing by this point and knew I could be good at it so I applied for a job with Nicky Clarke and worked with him for a number of years. I assisted Nicky on some really exciting projects and learned the craft from him and the team. I knew I wanted to build something for myself and therefor went on to open my own salon in Birmingham.

What has been the highlight of your career?

I have had lots of highs in my career and I feel really grateful and lucky to have experienced so much already. I think opening my own salon has to be my ultimate highlight. It was such an incredible feeling opening the doors to my own salon in my home town of Birmingham. It was such a proud moment and even now, almost two years later, I still get such a great sense of accomplishment when I open the salon every day and work with my day to day clients.

What does the future hold for you?

I am constantly pushing myself and believe that we should never stop learning. I have some exciting news to reveal in the near future and from that point onwards I plan to continue making my mark in the hairdressing industry. I would love to expand my celebrity client base even more but continue to work with my loyal clients in the salon too as I do love that part of my job.

What advice would you give to any aspiring hairdressers?

I would say that you have to be really dedicated to be a successful hairdresser. It can be a very challenging and taxing job and if you don’t have the passion and drive for the industry then I don’t believe it is the right career for you. If you are driven and determined to succeed then I would advise you to go for it as it is hugely rewarding and the opportunities are endless.
