5 Minutes with Andy Heasman of RUSH Hair

5 Minutes with Andy Heasman of RUSH Hair
Sam Robinson

We caught up with International Creative Director, Andy Heasman to talk about his hairdressing career and journey with RUSH Hair.

Andy, how did you start with Rush?

I started with Rush back in 2000 and since then my career has gone from strength to strength. When I began with Rush I really threw myself into education and began to explore just how education can evolve an individuals career. From here I was lucky enough to open my own franchised salon in Victoria.

At what point did you know that you wanted to work in hair fashion?

Believe it or not, I was getting my hair cut in one of my local salons and watching the clients around me being transformed, the happiness on their faces and the techniques used by the stylists I was instantly hooked.

What was your ‘big break’ in career?

I think personally, for me, it was when I became an educator. To help nurture the career of an individual stylist is something really special and I am glad to have helped so many different people on their journey.

Andy profile -

Who is your role model in the profession?

Stell Andrew. Stell is my mentor and the one who inspires me more than anyone, it is a pleasure to work with him on a daily basis.M

What inspires you?

My team. I work with a great group of individuals and they completely inspire me each day. I want to push the boundaries with them and create trends that will make RUSH stand out in the industry.

What have been your greatest and most difficult moments as a hair stylist?

Throughout every career you have great moments and challenging moments, but that is how you learn. I would say the greatest moment to me as an educator is getting to see your student/stylist evolve and reach their ultimate goal.

What do you like most in your line of work: photo shoots, shows, or work with clients?

I love all three. Each brings a different setting, atmosphere and inspiration. Being able to work in the three areas let’s me develop as a hairdresser and really push my skills in each area. It is great to be able to share this with such a fantastic team surrounding me.

Is it difficult to work with you?

Not at all! I am known for being friendly and down to earth! I the love the atmosphere of working in a team – this industry just gets better all the time!

What’s the most important quality you look for in someone joining your team?

I always look for someone that is a team player, honest, passionate and has the view to grow as a person as well as within the hairdressing industry. Each quality, I feel, is extremely important to me when choosing a team member. I want them to be the best they can possibly be and with these qualities I think that can be achieved.

When you are styling hair do you take a colour into consideration?

Absolutely – this is extremely necessary! We discuss this a lot within the consultation as it allows us to discuss our plan with the client in order to achieve their hair goals while also ensuring the colour and cut work together to provide something unique.

What advice do you have for people who wish to go into the industry?

Take it seriously and never stop learning. In our industry education is key to ensuring your skills and techniques are constantly on point and that you are offering clients the latest in services.

Best hairstyle forever?

The bob. There is so many variations and versions that it’s hard to pick any other style!

What’s your motto/advice you live by?

‘Treat others how you wish to be treated.’
